Purchases you make through this Amazon.com page will help the Committee. A small percentage of each sale, usually about 4%, will go back to the Committee to help fund our efforts. Your cost for your purchases doesn’t change at all - it’s called an “affiliate” fee, essentially a commission they provide for leading buyers to their site. It’s also perfectly safe. We never see your credit card number, what you purchase, or even your name.
All you need to do is bookmark this page, and come here whenever you want to search for anything at Amazon.com. Type your search information into the Amazon field above, and click Search. That’s it. You’ll be brought to Amazon’s regular home page, and any purchase you make during that session generates a donation to the Committee.
The details behind this are interesting for the technical and financially minded. State law prohibits a corporation from donating directly to a political committee. So we worked with the state office of Campaign and Political Finance, and found a legal way to allow these donations. The fees are collected at Amazon under a tracking ID used strictly for the Douglas Democratic Town Committee. Reports are generated and publicly disclosed at Committee meetings. When the fee reaches a threshold determined by Amazon (currently $100), they issue a check to one of our officers. The officer then donates that exact amount to the Committee. It’s all done in public and has been approved by the state office of Campaign and Political Finance. And it’s a great way to help!
