Andy Rooney on Electric Poles

Town Committee
October 10th, 2005

Here in Douglas we’ve been discussing the possibility of underground utilities through the downtown area. Andy Rooney of 60 Minutes has been thinking about it too. His opinion, “Power companies argue that it’s too expensive to bury wires and cables. Well, it’s never too expensive to do the things that absolutely ought to be done… Maybe we could build log cabins for the homeless out of old telephone poles.”

25 years of C-SPAN call-ins

Town Committee
October 8th, 2005

I’ve always admired C-SPAN, the cable channel that covers Washington like no other. They are actually three cable channels and a radio station, all without commercials, and all without significant editing. If it happens in Washington, or relates to Washington, you can bet they’ll be there. No soundbites either. They tape before the speech begins and after it’s over. They air live speeches from the Senate and House floor - even when the speaker is the only one in the room. (You’d be amazed how often that happens!)

Octoberfest, Yard Sale photos

Town Committee
October 3rd, 2005

Octoberfest was a smashing success, for both the Democratic Town Committee and the town as a whole. No one could have asked for better weather. The whole town Festival Committee deserves a big round of applause for putting on a great show. By the end of the day we’d sold out of pumpkins, and countless children had a great time with Santa.

A week prior to Octoberfest we held our annual fall yard sale, also in perfect weather. Thanks to everyone for helping out. We have a few photos from both events, so read on!

Octoberfest - Behind the Scenes

Dave St. George
September 29th, 2005

My name is Dave St. George and I’m a member of the Octoberfest committee. I joined the committee two years ago. As a town resident, I had attended the Fest for many years. It was obvious that the committee needed more people to help out and I enjoy being a worked for a good cause. The Committee, headed by Tony and Mary St. Pierre, welcomed me with open arms. As with any short handed committee you are given an assignment right off the bat. Mine was to be in charge of the morning Parade. Then I learned that there are many other duties that the whole committee takes part in. Being semi-retired I was able to do a lot of the running around which I didn’t mind doing. This is my second year and I still enjoy it.

Capital Improvements and You

Town Committee
September 20th, 2005

In what seems like a million years ago, I was just beginning to volunteer for town government. As the new kid on the block I was asked to serve on a new little-known new committee then called the Capital Planning Committee. I wasn’t quite sure what I was getting myself into, but it’s turned out to be a great way to be involved.

Heating Oil Comparison!

Town Committee
September 19th, 2005

If you look in our Links section on the right, you’ll find a great site for those of us worried about the cost of heating oil this winter. Between the war in Iraq and the recent hurricanes, no one know how bad it will get - it’s already bad enough! The site is managed by the Energy Data Corporation, and the site we link to is just for Central Massachusetts. We hope it helps you save some cash!

We’re on the lookout for more useful, local links. If you know of any, just let us know by using the Contact link on the right.
